Women Who Don’t Know They Are Pregnant Until the Baby is Born

I was watching a new series on Discovery Health the other day that left me partially stunned and partially wondering if it was a joke.  But it seems that it was no joke, and apparently it happens enough that a television show was created to talk about why this happens.  What is this phenomenon? The show features women that didn’t know they were pregnant until they actually gave birth.   Not every pregnancy is the same, but typical symptoms that women experience during pregnancy include, weight gain, swollen feet and ankles, morning sickness, mood swings or feeling emotional, cravings and fatigue.

The program features stories of women who didn’t know they were pregnant, partially because they didn’t experience the typical symptoms that most pregnant women experience.  All of the women had inconsistent menstrual cyles and they stated that it would be normal for them to miss their menstrual cycle for several months at a time.  A few of the women even thought they had had a period.  Doctors explain that women may experience bleeding during pregnancy that is not actually a period.  Another commonality that the women shared was that they  were either thin/small or overweight.  A few of the thinner women in the show only gained about 10 pounds during the pregnancy, while one of the overweight women thought her weight gain was due to depression.

Not knowing they were pregnant meant that some of the women continued to smoke or drink alcohol and none of them received the prenatal care that they needed.  Many of the babies were born premature.

What can we learn from these stories? Women of child bearing age need to pay special attention to what’s going on with their bodies and never assume that being pregnant is an impossibility unless they have truly been abstinent.

I’ve heard about this multiple times and still find it extremely odd. I’ve seen the shows and read the articles, but I still “don’t get it.” Trust me, I KNEW I was pregnant. I think you are correct, women must know their bodies, not just in case of pregnancy, but for other medical conditions.

I think it’s truly important to develop “inner” body awareness. I’m frequently surprised to find many women are quite unaware of what’s going on inside theirs. No woman wants to have an unexpected child that’s born prematurely and feel guilt about drinking or smoking during pregnancy. This video confirms the need for that kind of education and awareness.

I agree. Developing an inner body awareness is vital to optimizing our own health.

Wow…there have been times when a woman I knew who I thought had just put on weight told me she was pregnant and near due…but I never imagined a pregnant woman herself might have the same confusion…and I really don’t get how someone could be pregnant without visible physical changes, as described here….strange, interesting stuf….

Yeah, it’s strange that some women don’t notice symptoms. Other women just overlook the symptoms that they do have. If you ever get the chance check out the discovery channel episodes.

It happened to a room mate of mine in college. She did’nt know she was pregnant till 6 months. Neither did we her room mates. It was when the baby started kicking and she wondered what was moving in her tummy that she went to see a doctor and got the news. We were all shocked.
Thats weird enough but right up till delivery?! Amazing!

    Hi,
Thank you for highlighting this issue. For some reason those women are not able to know that they are pregnant.WOMEN NEED to take care of their bodies and should be intune with their own body .If their change by any ways they should not take it lightly as pregnancy need a good antenatal care and to adopt more healthy life choices.

Very interesting. I often watch the DIY births on TV. It still amazes me that a woman wouldn’t know she was pregnant, but it does happen. Thank for the read!

The truth is, it is every possible to be pregnant and Not know. Many women have a tilted uterus and this is what makes it impossible for them to feel the baby move and kick. I saw one lady on a show i long time ago with this issue. She went into labor and thought she was dying. Got her mom to take her to the hospital and even the doctors couldn’t figure out what was wrong until she finally felt like she had to go the the bathroom. She went and had the baby in the toilet. Its crazy but it happens more than yo uthink

This was very interesting to read.
I think I saw a movie on this happening, where a teen girl had this same situation.
I won’t get into details, but now I know that the movie was based on real stories.

It’s unbelievable that you can’t even have the slightest clue that your pregnant.

I’ve watched several episodes, and there is no way I will ever believe that a woman can be pregnant and not know it. I suppose they say they didn’t know they had sex. The changes your body goes through during pregnancy tells you something’s happening unless you are in total denial or ignorant. I suppose next they will say a woman is able to become pregnant without having any kind of sex, like: “It came from the hot tub or he just brushed up against me”. I’m not saying it isn’t possible, just saying I have sense enough not believe it

I have watched this show frequently and while a lot of people think this is improbable or the women just didn’t know their bodies, there are other reasons that most of these women didn’t know they were pregnant. Some of the women had other medical problems and had symptoms that related to a previous condition such as fatigue, swollen ankles, and “cramps”. What woman doesn’t have cramps or swollen ankles when they have a full time job. Some of these women had children before and didn’t experience any symptoms like they had previously. While many people want to criticize and analyze why these women didn’t know, it’s simple. They didn’t know. Most of them didn’t have any signs. No pregnancy bump, had “periods”, no cravings, no weight gain, and no feeling of the baby moving. Now I am not sure about all of them but I can understand most. I didn’t hardly feel my second baby move at all. Does that mean that I am not smart enough to know my body?

Hard to believe that some women don’t know they’re pregnant. All those changes, surely they must suspect something at least?
